Get Your Head in the Game with the Best Sports TV Shows and Movies

Updated: Dec 9, 2020

It is that time of year, it's the sports season! If you are a fan of sports then this is the guide for you. The holidays are almost here and besides eating good food and spending time with family and friends, it is also a good time to kick back, relax, and watch a good game. With COVID around, the games on TV have not been the same, but do not worry! This guide will satisfy your need to watch a game without heading to ESPN. Check out our Top 5 shows and movies on your favorite streaming platforms that will get your head in the game.

1. Remember the Titans (Disney+)

If you are going to watch one thing on this list, choose this one. Long considered the best football movie ever made, Remember the Titans is the true story of the 1971 T.C. Williams High School football team, coached by Herman Boone. Boone, played by Denzel Washington in one of his best roles, is the newly-appointed African-American head coach of the Titans at the recently-integrated T.C. Williams High School. With racial-fueled tensions running high, Boone has the task of leading this team to glory. His job is made harder by racism in the community and from sporting executives, but despite it all, he brings his players and community together and leads them to a state championship. The message of this movie is needed now more than ever, making it a must-watch, even for non-sports fans.

2. Sandlot (Disney+)

“You’re killin me, Smalls”. This movie has become a cult classic, beloved by sports fans everywhere. The Sandlot is a coming-of-age film about how sports can bring people together. In 1962, Scotty Smalls has just moved into a new town and is struggling to make friends. He tries to play baseball with some local kids, but his lack of athleticism lets him down. Nonetheless, he is invited to play with them by their star player Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez, who becomes Scotty’s mentor. Scotty eventually bonds with the team, overcomes his fear of the neighborhood menace “The Beast”, and finds where he belongs.

3. All or Nothing (Amazon Prime)

All or Nothing is an Amazon Prime original series that takes you behind the scenes of some of the world’s biggest sports teams for a season, giving fans an unfiltered look into what it really takes to be a winner. The two seasons we especially recommend are the seasons of the Dallas Cowboys and Manchester City. The show features locker room discussions that are rarely seen by the public and raw interviews with players and coaches as they deal with the often-overlooked mental toll of being a professional athlete. 10/10 Amazon. Well done.

4. Last Chance U (Netflix)

You see the headlines all the time. A major college football star gets caught up doing something stupid. Assault, drugs, or bad grades. “What are you thinking?! You were living the dream!”. But nobody really asks, “What happens to them next?”. Netflix expertly answers that question with Last Chance U, the story of Junior College football, or JuCo for short. These schools feature incredible athletes, many with demons they are still fighting, and attempt to get them to clean up their act so they can return to Division 1 college football and possibly go on to the NFL.

5. Moneyball (Netflix)

Moneyball is the true story of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics in the MLB. In 2002, the Athletics were broke and were losing their star players to teams that could afford better wages than the Athletics. Tired of always losing out to richer teams, Beane, played by Brad Pitt (heart eyes) goes on to recruit a Yale economics graduate and puts together a revolutionary new way to assess player value. Beane’s methods are now the staple of teams across the world in all major sports, not just baseball. Weaving this story together with Beane’s heartwarming relationship with his daughter Casey makes this a smash-hit.
