Your Guide to the Best International Shows

Let’s show our international people some love! As we scroll through Netflix and Hulu, we see these interesting movies and shows but wait, it’s in another language?? Sometimes we forget that these network streaming platforms are all over the world and not everyone speaks English, or English may not be their first language. It is great that Netflix, Hulu, and many other streaming platforms take into consideration that their audience is varied, and everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy a movie/show in their native language. However, even if it is not in a language or culture you understand, does not mean you still can not enjoy it! Hey, what are subtitles for? These are the top 5 international shows and movies that we think you should give a try and explore.

1. Black Spot (France)

If you enjoy a thriller, suspense, and the supernatural then this is the show for you! Black Spot is a French Netflix TV series created by Mathieu Missoffe about a police investigator starring, Suliane Brahim, who tries to uncover the mystery of the mass murders taking place in the small town of Villefranche. Through her discoveries, she discovers a dangerous world unknown to her. In France, this series is known as Zone Blanche which was released on April 10, 2017, but it was not until later in November of that year that Amazon Prime gained the right to stream the show globally. When their second season was released in 2019, they decided to stream both seasons on Netflix for everyone to watch. It has done very well on Netflix that they are expecting a season 3 coming out soon.

2. Money Heist (Spanish)

If you are looking for some thrill and drama, this show is for you! Money Heist is about a group of people who rob money from the biggest bank in Spain. The whole plan had been well thought out by the “Professor” for years before he gathered the team of people. This show will have you on your toes about what is going to happen next. You will fall in love with all the characters. While this show was originally in Spanish, it has been dubbed in many other languages. People around the globe have been enjoying this show and it has gotten many awards. There are 4 seasons out on Netflix right now and they got renewed for a fifth season.

3. Brassic (British)

Need something to make you laugh? Then this is the show that will make you scream! Brassic is a British comedy-drama with a bit of action streaming now on Hulu. These lads have been together since the beginning, and are now going through the hardships of life. Follow Vinnie, starring Joe Gilgun, and his crew on their crazy adventures of crime to make a living. This show was first aired in the United Kingdom on a streaming platform called Sky One, mostly used in the UK. When the show started to get popular, they started airing the show in many other countries, including the United States. It was not until July of 2020 that it officially streamed on Hulu.

4. Elite (Spanish)

If you loved Gossip Girl then Elite is right up your alley! This Spanish tv series combines all the drama of high school but with a twist. When one of the students of this elite private school is murdered suspense arises and we follow the story of the wealthy rich kids and the working-class students. This show tackles a lot of progressive issues which is what sets this drama apart for us. Elite has been renewed for its fourth season but you can catch up on the first three seasons on Netflix.

5. Dark (German)

The title speaks for itself. Dark is the first German thriller, mystery, and drama original Netflix series, released in December of 2017. This dark tale sets place in a small town where two children have gone missing. However, it’s not a matter of who, what, where, or how, but more of a matter of, when? Four families with a buried and sinful past have to uncover the tragic mystery of their unusual town. In a world full of supernatural events, tragedy, and time travel, watch these four families come together and reveal some secrets to find out what happened to the missing kids.
